College Basketball Predictions: Minnesota (+5) vs. Miami (-5) Over – Under 132
Minnesota travels all the way down to Miami for a matchup with the Hurricanes in the second round of the NIT.  The Golden Gophers are coming off of a nine point win over La Salle Wednesday, while the Hurricanes defeated Valparaiso by 16 that same day.  Minnesota will be playing its second consecutive road game when they face Miami Monday, but these teams are pretty evenly matched and Minnesota will cover the spread as the underdog.
Miami features two large bodies taking up space in the paint, but they weren’t major factors offensively in their last contest.  Reggie Johnson is a 6’10” 284 pounds and averages 10.0 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game, while his frontcourt mate Kenny Kadji contributes 12.0 points per game and 5.5 rebounds.  In the game versus Valparaiso, Johnson was limited to 9 points and Kadji scored 2 points in 14 minutes of action.
The Hurricanes looked like a team that may be able to play themselves into earning a place in the NCAA Tournament late in the season, but they failed to capitalize on their opportunity.  Miami has lost half of its last 10 games and have gone 1-3-1 against the spread in their last 5 games following an against the spread win.  Miami will also be missing 12.9 points per game from their lineup due to Durand Scott’s suspension for the entire NIT Tournament for receiving impermissible benefits.
Minnesota will be able to put pressure on Scott’s replacement in the starting lineup with one of their three guards that are in their starting lineup.  Minnesota has lost 7 of their last 10 games, but they have been in closely contested games in nearly all of those situations.  The Golden Gophers are 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 games overall and 4-0 against the spread in their last 4 road games.  In Minnesota’s last game, they were able to get 3 players into double figures scoring and seemed to be gaining confidence as a group even though it’s very late in the season.
Overall, Minnesota has performed well enough recently on the road to have a great chance of covering this spread, at the very least.  Miami is missing their star guard they are 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 games versus Big Ten competition.  Minnesota has not been granted a home game in the NIT Tournament and I have the feeling they are motivated to keep playing, so they can get one.
