Pro Basketball Predictions: Chicago Bulls (-7) vs. Toronto Raptors (+7) Over – Under 186

At first glance, tonights matchup between the Chicago Bulls vs Toronto Raptors looks like a easy game to pick. You have the best team in the NBA, the Chicago Bulls, with a 38-10 record playing the 3rd worst team in the NBA, the Toronto Raptors with a 15-31 .

It is an easy pick, but not the way you think.

Chicago will playing yet another game without Derrick Rose, their star, an NBA elite player. Derrick Rose is this teams everything. I am well aware that this team is 11-4 without him in the line up. But if you look closer, you will see that they aren’t the same team without him. The Bulls have failed to reach 90 points in 5 of their last 6 games without Rose. With him, they have scored at least 90 points in 15 straight games, and 19 of their last 20 games.

That is a major difference.

Rose is one of the most gifted scorers in the league. He can take anyone one on one. He create his own offense. He can step back and hit a jumper and he can drive to the hoop for a layup. He is a great scorer because he can do it in so many different ways. However, what is overlooked his is ability to get others involved. He is this teams true point guard. Rose gives this team 8 assist a game. He is the director and the star. He is everything to the Bulls.

Even if Carlos Boozer’s scoring numbers are up to 24 ppg without Rose, it’s still not the same team. They don’t have anyone to run the offense and that matters.

Still, If you think that it doesn’t matter that Rose is out because it’s against the lowly Raptors, you should think again. Rose has scored more than 30 points in 2 of their last 4 meetings with the Raptors. He has had 10 assist in 3 of those 4 games. He averages 26 ppg and 9 assist in those 4 games against Toronto.

Here is the stat that should get your attention. In their last 4 games against Toronto, Rose has contributed (points + assist) to 42% of their total offense. 42% of their offense is not going to be playing this game. Yet, the Bulls are 7 point favorites.

The Raptors are not as bad as their record indicates. They themselves have been playing without their star Andrea Bargnani. Bargnani has missed 25 games this season. He is their leading scorer at 20 ppg. And against the Bulls, he has only played in 2 of their last 4 meetings, but he has scored 23.5 ppg and 7 rebounds. He is playing in this game.

Raptors have their star back, and Bulls star is out. Still,  the spread is huge despite the fact the Raptors are playing at home and its the Raptors have covered 3 straight meetings. Tonight make it 4 straight for Toronto.

College Basketball Predictions: Pittsburgh (+1) vs. Washington St. (-1) Over-Under 132.5

In the only piece of College Basketball action for the day, Washington takes on Pittsburgh.  The Panthers are coming off a six point overtime victory Wednesday over Butler and look to add to their three game winning streak versus Washington St.  Pittsburgh comes into this game as a 1 point underdog even though they are better than Washington St. in almost every major statistical category.

The Panthers are only 15-16 against the spread this season, but they are 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 games overall.  The real problem lies in Pittsburgh very unimpressive road record as they come into this game versus the Cougars with a 4-8 record in road games this season.  That is obviously the main reason, why the Panthers come into this matchup as the underdog despite being the stronger team on paper.

Washington State on the other hand, is 11-4 at home this season and does not boast a much better record against the spread this season than Pittsburgh.  Washington State is only 16-16 against the spread this season, but they are 5-1 against the spread in their last 6 matchups with teams outside their conference.  The biggest strike against taking Washington State in this game is the injury status of Forward Brock Motum who would definitely be a major loss to the Cougar lineup if he cannot go Monday night.

Motum is listed as doubtful with an ankle injury, which means if he doesn’t play the Cougars will be missing 18.0 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game from their lineup.  The old adage in sports is “next man up,” but most college basketball teams playing in the N.I.T. don’t go very deep.  This will undoubtedly be a major problem for the Cougars when they face Pittsburgh.

Interestingly enough, in the Panthers last game they managed to win despite only two points combined for Nasir Robinson and Ashton Gibbs.  I don’t expect both players to have back to back terrible games, and if Pittsburgh can win without strong performances from either one they should really be tough to beat if one or both players have the type of games that they’re capable of having.
